The Hospital started as Capiz Provincial Hospital when Aklan was still part of the Province of Capiz, It was constructed in 1929 and opened for operation on May 12, 1930
On April 25, 1956, Aklan become autonomous from Capiz, thus the hospital was renamed Aklan Provincial Hospital.
In 1981, Aklan Provincial Hospital was renamed Dr. Rafael S. Tumbukon Memorial Hospital (DRSTMH), in honor of Dr. Rafael S.Tumbokon a former Undersecretary of Health.
